A Review Of Malayalam Cinema In The Last Two Decades

If Malayalam cinema is registered with Mumbai stock market what would be the graph. What will be the situation of someone who took 1000 shares in 1990, will that be a good share to buy now?Where Malayalam film industry stand now. I took a look at the Malayalam films released after 1990. I have seen more than 80% in that list. When you compare first half and second half, number of hits is almost the same but quality vice there is a huge difference.
Look at the films released in 1990, I was surprised to see a list of films that will stay in our minds forever. Some of the films released in that year can be recognized with the charector names in the film, who will forget Thalathil Dineshan, Nettur Stephan, Kottayam Kunjachan, Kannan Nair, Thomasooty, Appukuttan, Mahadevan all these in one year. I made a list of films released in 1990 which is worth watching, from a list of 102 films released that year.
Comedy flicks like Ramji Rao Speaking, In Harihar Nagar, Kouthukavarthakal, Kuttetan, Gajakesari yogam , Dr Pasupathy, Akare akare akare, Aye Auto, Manu Uncle
Family entertainers like Thalayana Mantram, Vadaku nokki yantram, Thoovalsparsham, Malooty, Kottayam Kunjachan, paavam Paavam rajakumaran, Thazvaram, Nanma Niranjavan Sreenivasan, Kurupinte kannaku pusthakam, Maalayogam, Thaazhvaaram
And action films like Indrajalam, Samrajyam,
And some of the classics of all time Mathilukal, Innale, Piravi, Lal Salaam,His Highness Abdulla

All these in just a year is quiet an achievement for this small industry.  What is the situation now, after 20 years. I checked the list of films released in 2010. The best films are Happy Husbands, Mummy and me, Malarvadi Arts club, Anwar, Pranchiyettan the saint, Cocktail, In ghost hiouse, Karyasthan. i included all these just because there are no options for me. There were a total of 20 films which has a super star in it, out of that only two were at least watchable.
Its a shame for an industry which have produced so many greats in all areas of cinema. Whats the problem here? Short of stories or new ideas or marketing strategies or new directors or actors or screen play's, i don't think so.
We, viewers also changed a lot in these years. Who is responsible for this change? I believe that its time to think beyond these so called superstars. We are depending heavily on these and they are giving nothing but some scraps. They have to be more selective, they are doing films for their fans, we can watch these movie like we are watching superman or shakthiman, nothing more than that.
Coming back to what i mentioned earlier, if malayalam film industry is registered with mumbai stock market, and let it be 100 rs in 1990, i am pretty sure now the rate will be less than 50%. I hope someone will do something to rescue our industry
