Thalassery - Every thing you want to know about Thalassery

THALASSERY - Everything you want to know about Thalassery

Thalassery formerly known as Tellicherry is a famous city in Kannur district in the state of Kerala, India. Thalassery is a small area in Kannur and is known as the political and cultural capital of Malabar. Thalassery in Kannur is a northern district of Kerala.Thalassery(21 km from Kannur) – It was constructed in 1708 AD when the British East India Company established its settlement on the Malabar Coast. Thalassery is famous for many reasons. It is often called the city of "three C's" in the state - cricket, cake, and circus. ... In this article, I will discuss these. Thalassery may have originated from the ancient Malayalam linguistic usage 'Thala' (Head) and 'Cheri' (low lying settlement place), thus Thalassery or 'starting place of a settlement or head of a settlement'.  It could also have emerged from Talakkathe Cheri, a combination of 'Talakkate' (Upper or north) and 'Cheri' (Settlement). Thalassery could be a village, and it has so many places named as parimadam, ussan motta, maakkoottam,Thalai, Thalassery old bus stand, Thalassery new bus stand etc.

In this article I am telling about history, villages in Thalassery taluk,3C’s, theyyam, education, transport, tourism, political violence, all attractions in Thalassery like Muzhappilangad Beach, Thalassery fort, Mahe, Dharmadan Thuruth, Kannur, attractions of Thalassery such asParassinikkadavu, Jagannath Temple, Overbury's Folly, Sree Kandeswara Temple, etc….
HISTORY
Thalassery was a trade hub where Chinese, Arab, and Jewish traders had considerable influence in the spice market.
The arrival of the Europeans
The first European entered into the region was Portugal in 1498. The relationship between Vasco da Gama and Samuthiri deteriorated and Vasco entered into spice (pepper) trade with Kolathiri. Francisco de Almeida the first Portuguese Viceroy to India, established military barracks in Cannanore (~30 km north of Thalassery) in 1505.
The French East India Company established military units in Thalassery in 1721 and later moved to Mahé (~5 km south of Thalassery). The British established a trading post and built a factory at Tellicherry in 1694, having gained permission from Vadakkalankur, the prince regent of the Raja of Kolatunad. They had already been trading on the Malabar coast for much of that century, buying pepper from merchants, and had established a similar post at Travancore ten years earlier.
The British, Dutch and the Portuguese and Christian Missionaries contributed a lot to the field of education, sports, culture and many developments of this region.

In my mind, Thalassery is the land of three C’s such as circus, cricket, and cake. when I am thinking about Thalassery I feel happy bcoz It is three c’s one is about entertainment that is a circus. All human beings like entertainment bcoz in this fast world everyone wants relaxation. All-time working or studying is not satisfactory to our mind…. We want some enjoyment so circus is a good thing for watching and enjoying. second one is cricket. It is a game. It also gives pleasure to us.childrens and all elders like cricket. You all know how the game is…… the Third one is cake. Wow…..
We all like cake. On special days we are buying cakes and eating it …..
 Circus
Vishnu Pant Chhatre's Great Indian Circus, established in 1880 at Bombay was the first circus establishment in India. A tour of Thalassery led to the meeting of Chhatre with Keeleri Kunhikannan a martial arts trainer. Keeleri Kunhikannan established the first dedicated circus school in India in 1901. He is known as "the father of Kerala Circus". A Circus Academy was inaugurated in Thalassery in 2010.
Cricket
Thalassery Stadium, located close to the sea, hosts Ranji Trophy cricket matches quite often. Lord Arthur Wellesley is believed to have introduced this game in Kerala in the 18th century for British soldiers garrisoned in the Tellichery Fort. India's first cricket club, which was later named the Town Cricket Club, was formed in 1850 at Tellichery by Wellesley. The Tellichery Cricket ground was the hub of cricket activities in those days. An exhibition match was conducted in this ground to raise funds during the First World War.
cakes
And what about cakes? Thalassery takes the mother of all cakes.  The old bakeries, still with those baking units tell us the sweet relation between Thalassery & cakes. Mambilli cakes, which once served the Britishers, have still not lost their predominance. Now keeping aside history, let's explore Thalassery. Thalassery biriyani is also famous.
Theyyam
Theyyam is a ritual performance art form that depict the cultural heritage of North Malabar, especially of ancient Kolathunad. The performers of Theyyam belong to the lower caste community and have an important position in Theyyam. Theyyam depicts Shiva bhutaganas, Kali and other deities and cultural heroes. The drama is enacted based on ancient stories and the language used is "Tottam pattu", a primitive form of Malayalam. Theyyam shows the Buddhist influence from centuries ago. Theyyam is usually held from October to May every year. The color of Theyyam is typically red. Velan is described in the Sangam literature 500 CE. It could have been a tribal ritual art that evolved under Buddhism and the Brahminic revival of Hinduism. This art form is addressed as "Kaliyattom" North of Pazhayangadi Puzha, Kannur, as "Theyyam" South of the river and as "Tirayattom" around Thalassery.[29]
